How to Make Flower Bouquet

A flower bouquet can make an excellent gift. Such bouquets are often used to show respect during social or personal events such as birthdays, holidays, weddings and funerals. They may also be used as accent pieces for home decor, such as on a dining room tabletop. Rather than purchasing bouquets from a commercial florist, learn how to make your own fresh flower bouquet. Creating your own arrangement can be a great way to save money while expressing your own creativity.

Things You'll Need
Fresh flowers
Twine, wire, ribbon or plastic sheeting
Spray bottle of water (optional)

Instructions

1. Select the bouquet theme or style. Often, bouquets follow a specific theme (e.g., wildflowers) or color style (e.g., cool colors, pastel colors or a specific hue such as red).

2. Pick the types of flowers you want to use in the bouquet according to the color or theme you chose in Step 1. For example, you may choose roses and chrysanthemums if you are going for a red-hued style. Your options will be limited to the flowers available from your local florist or nursery. Refrain from adding more than three or four different types of flowers to allow each bud to stand out rather than being lost in a bouquet that's too busy or crowded.

3. Select the actual flowers. Choose stalks with closed buds or buds that are only slightly opened to extend the bouquet's life. Also check the leaves on the stalk, as they can indicate the overall health of the flower. Full, green and crisp leaves are preferable to wilted or limp leaves.

4. Arrange the flowers. The tallest flower stalks should be in the center of the bouquet, with the height decreasing as the flowers approach the edges of the bouquet. Ensure variety by trimming flower stalks so you can mix up the flower types within the bouquet.

5. Secure the bouquet. Methods of securing vary depending on the overall look you are going for. An elegant option is to use ribbon that complements or matches your bouquet's color hues. A cheaper alternative is a plastic sheet or a simple wire.

Flower Bouquet Ideas

Flower bouquets are popular for many occasions, especially weddings, or as presents. When fashioning a bouquet, think about the theme and feel of the event. Bouquets can be traditional, classic, unusual, colorful or neutral. Add ribbons, greenery, berries and other elements for a unique touch.

White
A white bouquet can be classic and elegant. Choose a variety of flowers in white, such as calla lilies, roses, sweet peas, ranunculus and orchids. The bouquet can be round, with the blooms close together, or loose, with white flowers on vines trailing downward.

Single Stem
Single-stem bouquets are simple and beautiful. Choose a flower that is dramatic on its own, such as a rose or a calla lily. Tie a ribbon around the stem to dress up the flower.

Nosegay
A nosegay is a small, round bouquet. Popular choices for nosegays are peonies or hydrangeas. Nosegays typically have greenery mixed in with the flowers. Choose delicate, fern-like sprigs or greenery with larger leaves. Include greens with berries for a fall or winter nosegay.

Cascade
Cascade bouquets are commonly used in weddings, for brides who want the utmost drama from their flowers. As the name suggests, cascade bouquets are long, with vines and ribbons trailing downward. These bouquets can be any color combination, and often feature roses and other flowers that grow on vines.

Bright Colors
Choose a brightly hued bouquet to add a pop of color to your event. The bouquet can consist of several different kinds of flowers all in one shade, like hot pink, or mix several different bright colors together, such as orange, red and yellow.
